When people think of Virgo energy, perfection comes to mind. The attention to detail, the critical nature, and finding flaws in everything seem to be synonymous with Virgo. However, as Virgo begins to mature, they understand seeking perfection by honing in on flaws only leads to a perpetual sense of discontent.
Because no matter how hard Virgo tries to be perfect, there’s always something that just isn’t right. Eventually, the mature Virgo realizes that instead of trying to make everything perfect, perhaps a more balanced approach to improvement is the key which leads Virgo to seek wholeness. At its best, Virgo represents the integration of the mind, body, and spirit in the physical.
The Duality of Virgo
Read More »This is similar to Virgo’s opposite sign of Pisces which represents two fish swimming in opposite directions. Pisces embodies the energy of being both the saint and the sinner. The link between the two fish shows that there is no separation between the two polarities.
In Pisces, all is One. Virgo also has the capacity to hold the energy of opposites as well…even if its zodiac opposite doesn’t appear to have the duality of the Gemini twins, Sagittarius half-man, half-horse centaur, or the two fish Pisces.
As Virgo matures, it understands that perfection isn’t possible because there’s always something to improve upon. So, instead of trying to reach a state of perfection Virgo chooses to move forward on the path of self-improvement which focuses on the synthesis and integration of all parts of the self.
The Trap of Perfectionism
Perfectionism is a trap. Virgo’s ruler Mercury hones in on details to detect flaws and errors. However, it’s never really possible to live in a state of perfection. Virgo can clean all day, but at some point, things will become dirty again.
Virgo can chastise itself and others for not meeting certain standards, but we are all human, we all make errors and fall short. Thus, striving to be perfect only leads to a state of reaching for a state that can never be achieved. Virgo strives and strives for a perfect state that is forever elusive.
Never Enough; Forever Dissatisfied
One of the many complaints people have about Virgo energy is that it is constantly looking for something wrong. Nothing can ever just be as it is. There’s always something that needs fixing. Because of this, Virgo at its worst can be the critical nag that’s always seeking to notice imperfections. Have you ever dealt with someone that is never happy? Someone that finds fault with everything that you do? Welp, that’s Virgo energy at its worse.
The constant awareness of flaws makes Virgo dissatisfied. There’s never enough dieting. There’s never enough organizing. Even if they reach the highest credit score, that’s not perfect enough. There’s always something more to fix. Sometimes Virgo can take the need for perfection too far which messes up the beauty that often comes with imperfections.
A perfect example of this is someone who has plastic surgery to get the “perfect” face. The only problem is that plastic surgery removes those defining features that make Virgo special and unique. In general, this perpetual dissatisfaction can lead to other issues such as eating disorders.
Some would say that Virgo energy is associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder where there is this need to constantly control and bring order to oneself and the immediate environment. In many ways, this sense of dissatisfaction propels Virgo to keep striving for perceived perfection.
The mature Virgo realizes that perfection is a trap that creates an unattainable cycle that leads to criticism and disappointment. It is through this perpetual dissatisfaction that the mature Virgo moves away from unattainable perfection to seek the wholeness of the self.
Moving from Perfection to Wholeness
It is important to note they just because Virgo shifts from perfection to wholeness doesn’t mean Virgo gives up its defining character traits. Virgo is still critical. It still desires cleanliness and purity. It still wants to create order. It is how the characteristics are applied in the shift from perfection to wholeness that matters. Instead of trying to make everything perfect, Virgo shifts to the idea of honoring all parts of itself on its path of self-improvement.
A Reassessment of Flaws
As Virgo shifts from perfection to wholeness, flaws take on a different light. Under the energy of perfectionism, flaws cannot be tolerated. In fact, under Virgo energy flaws are to be fixed now. However, in embracing wholeness, Virgo understands that we all have aspects of ourselves that aren’t the best or that we feel insecure about.
Virgo learns to see flaws as part of the totality of who they are. For example, instead of desiring to reach an unattainable weight through extreme dieting and exercise that could lead to an eating disorder, on the path of wholeness, Virgo chooses to adopt a lifestyle that includes consuming healthy foods and moderate exercise that leads to improved overall health and wellness and even the desired weight loss.
Perfection is the pursuit of an ideal that may not always be achievable under certain circumstances. Wholeness allows for the desired improvement through integration as opposed to the need to fix perceived failings and flaws.
Continual Filtering
Under the energy of wholeness, Virgo uses discernment to filter out that which doesn’t add to its integration. When one considers perfection, there’s this idea of being unblemished. However, under the energy of wholeness, even if Virgo is not necessarily at its best, it can still be whole.
Perfectionism is actually at a disadvantage for those who pick away at parts of themselves instead of embracing themselves fully. When the filtering function of Virgo is used to discern what is needed for wholeness, Virgo seeks unity of the self through acceptance of all of itself as opposed to picking away at itself through the pursuit of perfection.
Fixing with Balance
The fixing associated with Virgo energy is still part of the path to wholeness. Virgo will always want to make adjustments to implement order and improvement to the everyday lived experience. As the mature Virgo embraces wholeness, this “fix-it” element is less about being perfect and more about the integration of all parts of the self to achieve balance. The mature energy of Virgo wholeness prepares the self for the experience of balance that is experienced in Libra.
Elevation Through Synthesis
There’s definitely a beauty in Virgo’s journey to wholeness as it brings a synthesis of the self. When Virgo reaches the stage of being aware of wholeness, it understands that the goal of life is not to make everything appear perfect but to honor all parts that make up the whole.
When Virgo commits to the path of wholeness, it is more likely to stop seeing others and itself as projects to fix. It’s more capable to help the self and others achieve mind, body, and spirit connectivity.
Ultimately, the journey from the pursuit of perfection to the path of wholeness allows Virgo to understand that we are all worthwhile and valuable in the current moment as we navigate through the process of self-improvement.
