After one of the craziest years ever recorded, the entire Earth is on the road back to normalcy. With shots going into arms, people getting back to work and their lives, this summer is setting up to be one of the biggest ever and you can’t have the biggest summer without some of the biggest movies to lure people back to the theatre. While the current landscape of movies hasn’t really changed (superheroes, explosions) we are seeing women and people of color get more and more prominent roles in big films and that is always a good thing. If you are someone itching to get back into theatres, you’re in the right place because we’re about to dive in to the hype and list the top movies coming this summer.
Black Widow – July 9 – Theatre/Disney+ Premier Access
Scarlett Johansson will be reprising her role as everyone’s favorite Russian spy in an origin story for the character. With other big names involved (Rachel Weisz, David Harbour), this is looking like a fun ride. Dropping in theatres and on Disney+ ($29.99 fee w/subscription) there will be no reason you’re not watching this movie.
Embracing the crazy, keeping it fun and exciting, great characters and even greater cars, this franchise has found it’s lane (pun intended) and isn’t willing to let up on the gas (last one, I think). The bands all here with franchise favorite Han making a return and John Cena making his debut to the FF family. Let’s gear up for “One more ride” before they take this thing to outer space!
Matrix 4 – TBD – Theatre/HBOMax
No matter how you feel about how this incredible franchise ended, it was one hell of a ride. The story was fresh, the visuals were something we’d never seen before and seeing the actors do the major fighting scenes blew audiences away. After a divisive ending the Matrix is back with a brand new story and Neo! With the addition of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman), the return of Carrie Ann Moss and other fan favorites, this next installment may be able to undo some of the mess that was the original Matrix Trilogy. No word yet on a release date, but it does fall under HBOMax’s plan to release movies this year both in theatres and on their streaming service at no extra cost.
Cruella – May 28 – Theatre/Disney+ Premier Access
Disney is continuing it’s current trend of dipping into their deep vault pockets and giving classic Disney movies the updated live action treatment. This time around is not just an update but an origin story for one of Disney’s most notorious villains, Cruella de Vil. Played by Emma Stone, this Cruella will be getting her devil horns in as she battles for nastiest and classiest Disney villain against Emma Thompson playing the Baroness. Releasing both in theatres and on Disney+ (additional costs), this is one to definitely see.
Suicide Squad – Aug 6 – Theatre/HBOMax
When Disney let Writer/Director James Gunn go before finishing out his trilogy for Guardians of the Galaxy, the entire fandom almost lost their collective minds. Almost immediately, Warner Bros. announced that Gunn would be reviving/retelling the Suicide Squad. Being an obvious fit and given carte blanche to use and kill ANYONE he wanted to, Gunn got to work and put together a real life who’s who Suicide Squad of actors to bring his brand of crazy to the big screen. Starring Idris Elba, John Cena, Margot Robbie, Nathan Fillion and Sylvester Stallone as the voice of King Shark, you can already tell this is going to be an absolute BLAST!!!
Shang Chi – Sep 3 – Theatre
A few years ago, Netflix attempted to bring Iron Fist to the small screen and it didn’t got quite as planned considering they were 3 for 3 with their other Marvel shows. Now, Marvel is in the hands of Disney and they’re giving the kung-fu genre another run and it already looks fun and action packed.
The seemingly ageless Tom Cruise is back to play one of his most iconic roles after 35 years! Given Tom’s need for high flying stunts and the advancement of technology, this one should be an absolute blast.
CandyMan – Aug 27 – Theatre
Children of the 90’s will never forget the deep baritone voice of Tony Todd as Candyman. I personally didn’t wash my hair for fear he would appear while my eyes were closed. Fast forward 20 something years and new horror darling Jordan Peele has been tapped to write the script which will surely have me not washing my hair for a few weeks.
Spiral – May 13 – Theatre
Back in the early 2000’s, a small budget horror movie with an absolute killer twist ending, captured our imaginations and went on to spawn 7 more films. Now the franchise is back and set in the world of Saw with a story by Chris Rock and James Wan. While the addition of Chris Rock might make some feel funny (another pun), the trailer should squash all of that.
One of the most recent “out of nowhere” hits was the original A Quiet Place. Scary, tense and very different from other monster movies. Now with the sequel, the world of A Quiet Place will grow and be explored more. Add in Peaky Blinders’ Cillian Murphy, this is sure to be a tense, fun ride.
