From May 23rd through October 10th, the planet of discipline, accountability, and responsibility, Saturn, will go retrograde in the sign of Aquarius. Saturn in the sign of Aquarius is asking us to be responsible for how we deal with our freedom, humanitarian issues, and our relationship with the collective. Saturn’s trek through Aquarius is meant to help us have more responsibility in relation to our position with all of humanity.
The sign of Aquarius moves in its own way and oftentimes it is not understood by those that feel threatened by a progressive. Everything that we have built thus far under Saturn in Aquarius will go through a review during the Saturn retrograde period. It’s time to really consider whether or not we are building in a manner that is in alignment with the progressive, outside-the-box energy that Aquarius has been granting us. Are we really moving along into the age of Aquarius and channeling everything that represents, or will this Saturn retrograde transit bring up issues that need to be addressed so that we can truly integrate the energy of Aquarius in a practical, efficient manner?
Saturn Goes Retrograde

When Saturn goes retrograde, we all get the opportunity to rethink the plans and structures that we have been building. It’s kind of like reassessing whether or not we are where we really want to be. Very often we start out with a particular plan or idea in a relationship. Saturn being the responsible, accountable planet that it is, puts everything into building slowly knowing that if it keeps up the hard work it will reach the top of the mountain. Saturn carefully up the mountain with its plan thoroughly laid out knowing what to expect and knowing that as long as it follows the path, it will eventually get to where it wants to be.
When Saturn goes retrograde it’s time to reconsider structures. What are our plans? How did we get to where we currently are at this moment? Are we being responsible for how we got to where we are? Saturn also represents our fears. So, during this retrograde, it is very likely that people’s fears are going to come up again for review. What are you scared of? Why are you scared? How can you overcome your fears? How are your fears limiting your forward movement? These are questions to thoroughly consider during this Saturn retrograde period.
Reconsidering the Plan
Have you been on a specific path since Saturn moved into the sign of Aquarius? Do you feel like you’ve gotten your footing finally? Well, with this Saturn retrograde we are all being asked to reconsider our plans. Saturn understands that in order to achieve in the world a good plan is a necessity. A plan offers you the opportunity to map things out. In astrology, Saturn is the ruler of the tenth house, this position is the highest point of the astrological chart. The tenth house, Saturn, and Capricorn all represent achievement in the outer world. In order to obtain that achievement, there has to be a plan for Saturn to follow. Otherwise, you’re just going from place to place not really knowing where you’re going to end up in the end.
When considering Saturn retrograde in the sign of Aquarius, think about whether our initial plans have us moving beyond conformity. Aquarius likes to shake things up due to its ruler Uranus. Not one to stand for the status quo, Aquarius sees progression as moving beyond what it once was. With Saturn moving backward, we all get the opportunity to really ask ourselves if the plans we have made on a structural level are truly going against old paradigms. If we discover that our plans are reminiscent of what we would have done in the past, this Saturn retrograde gives us space over several months to seriously consider how we can apply the progressive energy of Aquarius to our plans once Saturn goes direct in October.
Reconsidering the Structures
The combination of Uranus and Saturn energy with this retrograde speaks to the opportunity to have breakthroughs with existing structures. This is pervasive energy that will be experienced by the individual to society. During the retrograde, we will personally and collectively see a deep reconsideration of everything that our lives are built upon. The existing systems that we all have in place for ourselves as well as the systems that keep this society running are up for review. The type of review that comes with the energy of Saturn in Aquarius retrograde is about the willingness to move against any system or structure that isn’t progressive. It should also be noted that Pluto in Capricorn is also retrograde at this time. Thus, there is increased energy focused on reviewing systems and rebelling against those systems through the Saturn in Aquarius energy as well as tearing down those systems with the Pluto in Capricorn energy.
The thought of reconsidering our structures is also likely to bring out a lot of fear in all of us. Saturn rules fear and with its transit through Aquarius, there could be a lot of fear centered around our connection with humanity and leaving behind the status quo. The status quo provides us with the tradition of what we do as individuals and collectively. Even when the existing structures don’t work and haven’t worked for a long time, it can be very hard for us to move away from something that is solid and familiar. Now is a time for us to genuinely consider how our attachment to the status quo is limiting our ability to achieve our goals and move forward in a progressive manner.
What Are You Reaching For?
Oftentimes, we set foot on a path with determination convinced that we know where we’re going, and how we intend to get there. However, it’s always good to take some time to pull back and really assess why we do what we do. Retrograde periods allow us to do the pulling back to reassess. With Saturn retrograde in Aquarius, all of those laid out plans and goals that we have established since Saturn moved into Aquarius are now up for review. We will get the opportunity to assess whether or not we are aligned with the higher energies of Aquarius. Are we the humanitarians that we say we are? Are we willing to push against the status quo to live with integrity? Are we willing to open our minds to new concepts and ideas? It is important to use the Saturn retrograde in Aquarius to reassess our plans and goals and genuinely be honest, accountable, and responsible with ourselves about whether we are truly harnessing the energy of Aquarius in this New Age of Aquarius.
Don’t feel bad about taking a couple of steps back to move forward. It is often in these times of deep reflection that we learn whether or not specific goals and plans are still applicable to our path forward. Aquarius energy has the ability to make us consider other options while broadening our perspectives. Hopefully, this retrograde period will encourage all of us to reevaluate our plans as well as the systems that we are currently invested in so that we can choose paths that offer the progressive freedom of Aquarius not only for ourselves but for all.
