It’s all about saying “yes” in this comedy. Starring Jennifer Garner, this movie dives into what would happen if parents say yes to everything. After having kids, Garner and her on-screen husband say “no” to protect them from danger. They discover their kids think they’re too harsh. The couple decides it’s time to say yes for one day. The wild antics ensue and they learn a few lessons throughout the movie. It’s not always good to say “yes.”
Nominated for Best Picture this year at the Academy Awards, Mank is pulling in rave reviews. It’s a tale told in a Hollywood retrospective by director David Fincher. Mank is about the life of writer Herman J. Mankiewicz, played by Gary Oldman, as he tries to write his Golden Age piece of work. This piece of work just happens to be Citizen Kane. Mank takes the viewer through the 1930s and 1940s following the writer’s development of this movie. The ensemble cast is astounding, many times making you forget this isn’t a classic movie. The cinematography and acting work together to create its own masterpiece.
I Care a Lot (2020)
Crawl into the minds of some twisted people in this psychological thriller. Rosamund Pike is a scary con artist posing as a kind legal guardian to elderly people. She really just wants to get into their life and steal everything she can. Her happy scam turns the wrong way when her newest victim happens to be the mother of a powerful mob boss. No one messes with Peter Dinklage, who decides to battle against her to see who can be eviler. The twists and turns of this movie will leave you questioning ethics in general.
Mud (2012)
Young boys having a day of fun come across a shipwrecked boat in a tree. They had no idea it would change their lives forever until they meet Mud. Matthew McConaughey Oplays the mysterious Mud living in the boat. The boys grow close to Mud learning more and more about his life. Mud is running from his past and doesn’t want to bring anyone down with him. This movie is about family and relationships at the heart of it. It’s a Huckleberry Finn sort-of-tale with a twist.
Hillbilly Elegy (2020)
Ron Howard directs this movie adapted from JD Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy memoir. Starring as JD, Gabriel Basso, is a teen in the Appalachians in the middle of hardship. His family can’t seem to get anything right. Amy Adams plays his heroin-addicted mother. His maternal grandmother, played by Glenn Close, is the only one that seems to have any grace in the family. She does everything she can to save this family, but it never seems to be enough. Gleen Close and Amy Adams are brilliant in their portrayals of these characters.
The Impossible (2012)
A family of five is enjoying Christmas vacation in Thailand when they’re thrown into the catastrophic 2004 tsunami. Based on a true story, the family survives and must make it back to each other. They’re beaten up and some badly injured. The ensemble cast gives the ultimate performance as they fight through the debris and damage to get back to each other. This is a movie that will tug at your heartstrings while giving you faith that miracles happen.
Nightcrawler (2014)
Jake Gyllenhaal gives one of the best performances of his career in this thrilling movie. He’s trying to find his place in Los Angeles doing crime journalism. He meets a group of freelance camera crews that make their money filming fires, murders, and crashes. He gets into this nightcrawling world. Every time he hears a siren, he busts into action. He begins to thrive in this wild world, but doesn’t realize he will be the star of his own film.
Superbad (2007)
Best pals played by Jonah Hill and Michael Cera are ending the school year on a high note. They play it cool when hottie Emma Stone invites them over to a house party and they agree to bring the alcohol. The insanity and comedy never stop as these boys and their friends do everything in their power to get their favorite ladies some alcohol despite their age. Nothing is off-limits, from a run-in with the police to getting hit with a car. The entire movie is filled with amazing writing and funny lines. Superbad is a classic comedy that sets the stage for some of the biggest actors of today.
Uncut Gems (2019)
Adam Sandler turns serious in this drama. Uncut Gems puts him into the world of gamblers on the rollercoaster of their life. He’s a jeweler always trying to find the next big thing so he can win the most money. When NBA player Kevin Garnett asks Sandler’s character about his most recent winnings, he thinks it’s good luck. He then goes all-in leading to a bet that could make or break his life. The family around him doesn’t want to wait for this big win. He must balance life, business, debt collectors, and his family to get to his big winnings.
The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019)
Take a peek into the secret life of your pets in this cute sequel about talking animals. The humans can’t hear them, but they know what life is about. This movie sees the pets going on a fun trip to the farm. They meet new friends in all of the crazy farm animals. A sheep dog played by Harrison Ford isn’t happy they’re on his turf. This movie is the perfect family-friendly adorable movie sequel.
Moonlight (2016)
Moonlight was the Academy Award’s 2016 Best Picture winner. Featuring Mahershala Ali and newbie Ashton Sanders, we follow their lives through the most dramatic chapters. The Black experience is in the spotlight as Sanders is shown growing up in Miami as a gay, black man. His community is all about support, except the crack epidemic is in full swing. He’s pulled away from his family and mentored by Ali.
Cool Hand Luke (1967)
This movie is a classic based on the book by the same name. Paul Newman is war veteran Luke Jackson. After a night of drunken times, Jackson was sentenced to a chain gang. Luke becomes an inspirational hero after he goes against the authorities in charge. The drama inside the prison tests Luke’s resilience and character. This movie paved the way for many other dramas after it. Newman’s performance along with his ensemble is astounding.
