Missing Dependent Payment
The first deadline of September 30th applies to those who did not receive the $500 benefit for their dependents. Many of the missed payments were to people who were non-filers but had dependents. These individuals included those on social security or those who receive supplemental security income. Others include recipients of railroad retirement benefits and those collecting Veterans Affairs Compensation and pensions.
Any federal beneficiaries with children under 17 who did not yet receive their stimulus payment of $500 per dependent must notify the government before the September 30th deadline. Affected parties should use the non-filer tool available on the IRS website.
Lost Stimulus Payment
Some people never received any stimulus check despite qualifying for one. Individuals who do not file but make at or below to $12,200 per year, or married couples who earn as much as $24,400 per year qualify for a $1,200 per person payment. The non-filer tool from the IRS website enables qualified individuals to make the government aware of the oversight. The deadline for these filers is October 15th.
Simple Notification Process
People can call about the missing payments, but the easiest and fastest option is to visit the IRS website to use the non-filer tool. A tab for the tool is on the IRS homepage. Click on the non-filer link and scroll the page. Select the “Enter Your Information” button, create an account, and answer the questions.
Necessary Dependent Information
The information to have available when looking for a dependent check includes a current mailing address and email address, a Social Security Number, and any available driver’s license number or state-issued ID. The IRS will also need a bank account number and routing number if requesting direct deposit as a payment method. Also needed is a 2020 IP PIN (Identity Protection Personal Identification Number) supplied by the IRS when filing taxes. Those that do not know their PIN use the IP PIN tool on the IRS website to receive a new ID.
Plan to complete information for all eligible children. Users should have the name, social security number, or adoption taxpayer identification number for each child. The form will also require the user to explain the relationship between the child and the person completing the form.
Required for Stimulus
Non-filers seeking the $1,200 payment will also need to have specific information available. A valid Social Security Number for the filer and any spouse, if married at the end of 2019. Know the filing status from 2019 of either single or married filing jointly. Check if anyone could claim as a dependent either the spouse or individual filing the claim. Anyone claimed as a dependent by someone else will not qualify for the stimulus payment. Have routing numbers and bank account numbers for direct deposit and personal identification for verification. If the filer also did not receive the dependent payment, have the birthdates and social security or adoption numbers of all children under age 17 available.
Accessible Instant Information
Anyone using the non-filer tool will receive an acknowledgment of their submission. The email will arrive from Customer Service at Free File Fillable Forms. Check spam folders if the email does not arrive in the inbox within 24 hours. Once notification of the submission arrives, it is possible to check the status through the Get My Payment page on the IRS website. Click the tab on the IRS webpage that says “Get my economic impact payment” on the homepage. Scroll down and select the “Get My Payment” tab. To view any information, visitors need the Social Security Number, date of birth, and address of the applicant. The information available through this button only updates once a day, and it can take several days or longer before a payout date becomes available.
Make certain to include correct information, including dates of birth and filing status, to avoid processing delays. Keep in mind that not everyone was eligible to receive a payment during the first round of stimulus checks. A final note: Individuals or families that miss the deadlines for their payouts can receive them with their 2020 tax returns. The instructions for all tax forms will include information on how to request the payment with any refund or to apply it against any tax owed.
