It is time for TikTokers to say “Let’s Go Crazy” and start dancing to the music of Prince today. The legendary pop star’s entire catalog will now be on the popular service for anyone to attempt to create viral dances of the iconic legend’s music.
The popular internet technology company was able to partner with the Prince Estate to get his music on the service and is now the first short-form video app to get to use his catalog worldwide. To commemorate this deal, the widely used mobile app will feature an array of themed programming in the coming days. This will include a playlist on the easily accessible Sounds page in addition to a tour of The Purple One’s iconic Paisley Park home in Minneapolis.

Of course, this will include classic albums like the “Purple Rain” soundtrack, “1999”, “Sign ‘O’ The Times”, The “Batman” soundtrack, and “Diamonds” among others.
Users of the popular TikTok mobile app tend to be fairly young in age and this is a great way for these youngsters to perhaps experience The Purple One’s back catalog for the first time. In fact, many of the social network’s users weren’t even born yet in “1999”. It might take some initial coaxing for the youngsters who are unfamiliar with the music to get on board, but there are enough songs to choose from that it is hard not to imagine this being a smart deal.
The social networking platform has already helped bring a bunch of songs into the mainstream in all kinds of different genres, so bringing the Minneapolis Sound to a new generation could be quite possible. The more people that create videos with The Purple One’s music will inevitably lead to more buzz in general.
Another key component of this service is that the snippets to each song are just 15 seconds, which are hand picked for the users. The hope here is that these short clips also lead to a boost in plays of the entire track on other platforms too.
The Minneapolis icon has always been fairly careful with where his music is distributed in general. In fact, a year before his untimely death, he removed all of his music from streaming services besides Tidal. In 2017, however, Prince’s music was brought back to other services like Spotify and his estate continues to seek to bring his music to new platforms.
This is another positive step for the popular social network platform because in the past there have been many issues with users being banned for numerous copyright violations. The more well known artists the social networking service can get to sign off for use on their platform the better the overall experience for everyone. The company has more than 8,000 licensing deals at this time, though many were already present because ByteDance (the owner of TikTok) acquired Musical.ly. In addition, the company recently partnered with Universal, Sony, and Warner.
One major issue for the social networking service has been getting these deals to move more towards the long-term. Right now, they are all short term agreements. This is because it still remains to be determined as far as the overall success of TikTok. The company recently hired Disney Plus leader Kevin Mayer to become the new Chief Executive Officer. Mayer was in charge of acquiring Marvel for Disney and ByteDance looks to use his experience to make additional deals in the coming months.
Be sure to keep an eye out for more viral videos of music featuring The Purple One. If the success of the social network is any indication, there will be plenty of “Purple Rain” to share soon.
