Figures released for 2019 show the migration forced on the people of the U.S. by COVID-19 has its roots in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed much of the landscape of the U.S. since New York became its epicenter in March 2020. The record number of Americans being affected by the virus continues to grow, with states across the nation seeing changes in their populations. News outlets and political figures continue to blame COVID-19 for the movement of millions of Americans out of major cities, but others dispute the claims the virus is to blame.
Each year, the moving industry reports on the number of people moving out of states and into others. The figures in the 2020 report on the migration of Americans show a change has been coming for a decade. The states mentioned in the 2019 report are many of those featuring in news reports about the movement of people because of COVID-19. At the top of the list of states, people are fleeing are New Jersey and New York, which have seen a decline for the last decade.

There is no doubt the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the speed at which many people are fleeing the major urban areas of the U.S., but these have seen a stunning decline over the last decade. The number of people fleeing New York City each day had grown to more than 300 by the end of 2019. This number is expected to grow by the end of 2020 because of several factors. The first is the lack of international travelers making their way to New York, with experts pointing to more than 60,000 international immigrants being barred from entering the city. Other factors include the ranking of New York as the epicenter of the virus in March 2020 and the continued number of people affected by the virus.
The decision to place California on lockdown in early December was another example of the reasons why 2020 will be a record year for people leaving the Golden State. Even before the pandemic swept through the state, the daily number of people leaving California had reached 276 per day by the end of 2019. Illinois is another state with major issues regarding the loss of residents in 2019 and 2020 as 164 people were departing each day. High numbers of people leaving the state of New Jersey were also recorded because of a lack of employment opportunities and high taxes.
It is easy to identify why so many people are leaving highly-populated states in 2020, and it is easy to see why some states are being chosen by newcomers to move to. The most popular states for new residents are in the South of the U.S., where property prices and population density are low. The most popular state for those moving out of major states is Texas, with Austin the fastest-growing city in the Lone Star State. Houston alone is adding more than 180 people per day to its ranks as the state of Texas remains popular with those looking for a new home with space and a high standard of living. Both Arizona and Georgia are seeing mass migration from across the U.S. as these growing cities become more popular.
The major reason given by those earning more than $100,000 per year for leaving New York City was a drop in their standard of living. The ability to live an enjoyable life with lower taxes for schools and auto insurance are among the top reasons for the rise in people leaving New York City and parts of New Jersey in the last few years. Despite the growing issue of people moving out of New York and Los Angeles, both cities will hold into their position as the most densely populated in the 21st-century for decades to come.
