Ruled by Pluto and Mars, Scorpio is one of the most complex signs of the zodiac, and for good reason. Due to its ruler Pluto, Scorpio, while fixed in nature, is also on a path of transformation. It is also one of the only signs that genuinely embodies the importance of the shadow self. Scorpio energy realizes that in order to become the fullest expression of itself it is necessary to acknowledge all parts of the self in order to evolve. Because of this, Scorpio is one of the only zodiac signs that have several symbols to represent its various stages of transformation.
Scorpio/Pluto & Evolution
Anyone with tenanted Scorpio energy understands the importance of evolution and transformation. In fact, those with Scorpio energy understand that if you’re doing Pluto energy any justice you’ll be able to look over their lives and see that who you once were is not who you are now. Scorpio energy is about getting to the depths of the soul in order to be the most authentic self. However, this is more than just about great sex and lording power over others. The type of Scorpio transformation that really gets to the core is the one that is centered on the transformation of the self. It is through deep, intense self-work that the Scorpio archetype is able to honor all of its selves in order to achieve the ultimate transformation of becoming the phoenix that rises from the ashes.
The Scorpio Archetypes

Anyone that knows astrology is well aware that Scorpio is represented by the scorpion archetype. However, in all, there are seven Scorpio archetypes that represent the Plutonian experience of transformation. The following are the seven Scorpio archetypes with a description of each of the characteristics of the particular stage. It is important to note that not all stages of the Scorpio archetype are experienced by each individual.
The Spider
The spider is the first and lowest evolutionary stage of Scorpio. The energy of this particular stage is represented by childish, manipulative antics which can also result in very spiteful mean behavior. True to the nature of a spider, those embodying this energy are not above weaving webs of deceit and manipulation when dealing with others. Although this is a stage that some Scorpio children possess, it is very possible for unevolved Scorpio adults to embody spider energy.
The Scorpion
The second evolutionary stage of Scorpio is represented by its most known symbol the scorpion. This particular stage still represents a level of immaturity which is accompanied by bouts of jealousy, obsession, and the potential to lash out at others with the infamous stinger.
The Lizard
The lizard is the third evolutionary stage of Scorpio. In this particular stage, the energy is less reactionary and more oriented towards using insight and sussing out the intentions and motives of others. Likewise, this is also the stage where Scorpio’s energy is focused on seeking revenge for past betrayals.
The Serpent
The serpent stage of Scorpio represents the energy of being reactionary when provoked. There is still a level of sussing out energies and an orientation towards removing oneself from negative situations. However, like a serpent, Scorpio energy at this stage will attack when it feels threatened.
The Wolf
At the stage of the wolf, Scorpio has developed a certain amount of wisdom and understanding. There is a desire to settle down and create a safe, protective environment for the self and for those it loves. It is important to note that at the wolf stage there is a certain level of balance and harmony as long as Scorpio is left to its own devices. However, even at the wolf stage if there is any form of external disruption, Scorpio will attack to protect itself and those that it loves.
The Eagle or Dove
At the stage of the eagle or dove, Scorpio is on a solid spiritual path. There’s a combination of detached discernment as well as peace. Here, Scorpio understands the tenet of “Let go; Let God” where they are no longer fixated on revenge. Instead, the energy is focused on continuing to develop the self through the spiritual process. Just like the eagle, Scorpio is still protective of those closest to them. However, there is this desire to release any need to make others pay nor is there a desire to control.
The Phoenix
In the end, the ultimate path of Scorpio is that of the phoenix. This is the state where Scorpio purposely relinquishes and destroys any remnant of its past self in order to evolve into its ultimate higher self. This is the stage of the phoenix rising from the ashes. At this particular point in life, Scorpio is very aware that they are capable of handling just about anything. There is no longer any desire to wallow in the darkness of revenge and control. It is at this phase that Scorpio is most at peace and adopts the principle of letting people live as they choose to do so with the understanding that they are aligned with their own spiritual purpose.
The seven archetypes of Scorpio reveal that everyone is on their own evolutionary path and that who we were at one point does not necessarily have to be who we are throughout the duration of our lives. It is through the intention of releasing the negative behavior patterns that keep us entrenched in particular behavior cycles and the dedication to honoring our own self-control and self-efficacy that we are able to embody the Plutonian energy of Scorpio transformation.
