While higher education is often touted as a means of becoming a well-rounded individual and a way to secure prosperity in various areas of life, this may not be the case for certain individuals. When considering whether or not higher education is for you, it is important to look at both the third and the ninth houses in the natal chart to see the potential of and the practical usage of education in the individual’s life. There are some individuals who are likely to excel in a higher education setting. However, there are other individuals who would do best to forgo higher education altogether for other types of learning modalities that are better aligned with their learning style and/or goals and ambitions in life.
Sagittarius, Jupiter, & the 9th House
In traditional astrology, higher education is represented by the sign of Sagittarius as well as its ruler Jupiter and the ninth house. Typically, individuals with Sagittarius energy are often seeking the expansion of consciousness by exploring beyond their immediate environment. Opposite of Gemini, Sagittarius seeks exotic lands which prompts them to travel in order to expand their view of the world. While Gemini is usually associated with its immediate environment and neighborhood when it collects facts and details, Sagittarius energy seeks to get on that plane, boat, or train in order to access people, cultures, and environments that are foreign to it in an attempt to expand its perception. Sagittarius is not really concerned with facts but with the subjectivity of experience. Even if Sagittarius is not able to travel, it can still expand its consciousness through the study of topics such as philosophy and theology which are all based on belief as opposed to facts.
The ninth house represents our own personal beliefs, and it also represents how we approach the experience of higher education. It is for this reason that it is important to consider the sign on the cusp of the ninth house, planets within the ninth house as well as any aspects to planets within the ninth house. Understanding the planetary energies that are associated with the ninth house provides additional information about how individuals perceive the experience that is higher education.
Planetary Influences Impacting Higher Education
In order to determine whether or not higher education is a viable option, it is important to consider the condition of the ninth house as well as the associated planetary energies. The following are two distinct examples of how certain planetary energies can impact the perception and the pursuit of higher education. By understanding the influence of these planetary energies we are able to understand why some individuals are more likely to pursue and excel at higher education while other individuals may feel that the higher education experience is not beneficial for their path forward.
Example One-An individual with Cancer energy associated with the ninth house may find that they feel at home within higher education. This individual may also feel that foreign lands and foreign people are more like home than their own native upbringing. In some capacity, individuals with Cancer energy associated with the ninth house may prefer to seek higher education away from the native home country such as through study abroad programs or foreign colleges and universities and/or choosing higher education at institutions that are considered long distance and/or via distance learning methods such as via the internet where the individual can complete higher education in the comfort of their home (combination of the ninth house and Cancer).
Example Two- The individual with Capricorn energy associated with the ninth house may find that there are limitations in regards to higher education. The Saturn influence associated with Capricorn denotes limitations, obstacles, setbacks, and delays in regards to higher education as well as long-distance travel, faith, and other ninth house experiences. Having Saturn associated with the ninth house doesn’t mean that higher education is not possible. It simply means that the individual will have to put in a lot of work to achieve the benefits of higher education. Remember, Saturn delays; it does not deny. Because of this, higher education is possible, but the individual with Saturn/Capricorn associated with the ninth house is encouraged to be realistic about the possible setbacks and delays that are associated with gaining higher education.
The provided examples offer insight into how higher education is perceived and experienced by different individuals according to astrology. There appears to be a general cultural expectation to pursue higher education. However, this expectation, as shown by the above examples, is quite faulty, as what is beneficial for one person may not be beneficial for others. There are some individuals who through specific planetary energies natally or by transit, are more likely to benefit from the higher education experience. Then, there are other individuals for whom the higher education experience is not desired or beneficial. Neither one of these perceptions of higher education are better or worse. They just are, and it is important to honor these differences when considering whether or not higher education is suitable for individuals.
Make the Best Choice for Yourself
When it comes to seeking higher education, ultimately it is up to individuals to make a choice that is best for themselves. While there are many outside influences that state that higher education is the way to go for a successful life, this is not a general truth. This is a belief, which ironically is associated with the energy of Sagittarius, Jupiter, and the ninth house. There are numerous people who have done amazing things as a result of higher education. Likewise, there are individuals who chose not to pursue higher education who have also achieved great success. Just consider all the wonderful people who have done research work and their amazing contributions to society due to their pursuit of higher education. Similarly, let’s consider the individuals who chose to forego the higher education route and became amazing artists, musicians, and innovative businesspeople who created advancements in technology without a college degree. Ultimately, the importance of higher education is relative to the individual. Astrology provides insights from the exploration of the ninth house that can help individuals decide for themselves whether higher education is a beneficial and/or necessary experience
