On Saturday, March 20, 2021, the March Equinox will occur. This means that in most time zones, the day and night will be of equal duration. In the Northern Hemisphere, this is the vernal spring equinox, while in the Southern Hemisphere it is the autumnal (fall) equinox.
The March equinox is the year’s first. The second occurs in September, and is known as the September Equinox. This is the spring equinox in the Southern Hemisphere and the autumnal equinox in the Northern Hampshire.

Scientists use the March Equinox to officially announce the start of spring for those in the Northern Hemisphere. The season ends during the June solstice, the start of astronomical summer. Meteorologists take a different approach: spring starts on March 1 and ends earlier on May 31.
So, when does the equinox officially occur? While many observe the entire day as the equinox, the official event does not occur until the axis of Earth is neither titled away nor towards the Sun, but is actually perpendicularly from the sun.
While the March Equinox date can vary, it is able to occur on the 19th, 20th or 21st of the month.
Why is the March Equinox Important?
Most places get to experience ample daylight and darkness during the night. Daytime will outlast the nighttime north of the Equator. This relates to where certain places are in relation to how nighttime and daylight are defined, as well as how the Earth refracts sunlight. Contrary to popular belief, everyone does not get to experience the same daylight and dark hours during the March Equinox.
This is also a time to celebrate and try new things. Want to balance an egg on its end? You can do that (although we hear it is possibly to do on other days, too). Psyched to welcome a new season by getting out in the fresh air? Go ahead! Many cultures also observe holidays and festivals to mark the occasion, such as Easter among Christians, a week of observance to remember ancestors in Japan, Earth Day and Iranian New Year.
Take time to observe the changing of the seasons and embrace the warmer weather or slight chill in the air, depending on where you live.
