One of the most important attributes of a holiday guest is his or her enthusiasm, and you’d be hard pressed to find someone that loves Christmas more than Buddy the Elf. Sure, you’d have to deal with the fact that Will Ferrell would be running around your house in a pair of tights and a pointy hat, but his childlike enthusiasm would absolutely make it worth it. In a time where it seems like society has become incredibly cynical and easily annoyed, Buddy would provide a breath of fresh air. He’d also probably ease the tension if you have any dinner guests that you’d rather not share a table with.
Cousin Eddie
Film: National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)

If we’re being fair, Cousin Eddie may show up for the holidays with or without an invite just like he did with the Griswalds in this 1989 Christmas classic. However, if you can deal with a rickety old RV in your driveway and a dog named Snot who has manners that reflect those of his owners, Cousin Eddie could easily win the hearts of you and your family. Afterall, don’t we all need at least one dinner guest who would be willing to kidnap our tightwad boss in the name of landing us that bonus that we’re counting on?
Jack Skellington
Film: Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Since this entire list is hypothetical, you’re absolutely allowed to invite cartoon characters over for Christmas dinner. Obviously, Jack Skellington is more tailored for Halloween than Christmas, but once he got his first taste of the magic of Christmas, the tights-wearing skeleton was hooked. It would be easy to assume that the king of Halloweentown would be entirely too creepy to spend the holidays with, but underneath that creepy exterior, Jack is just as excited about the lights and magic of Christmas as the rest of us are.
Granville Sawyer
Film: Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
Played by: Porter Hall
Granville Sawyer may have been the only sane character in the quintessential holiday classic, Miracle on 34th Street, and that’s probably why we would want to have him over. Sawyer was the only person in the film who recognized Kris Kringle’s delusions, so he worked tirelessly to head off the litigation that was sure to ensue. Of course, the only way to pull that off was to have the disturbed Santa fired. Unfortunately, Kringle was so angered by Sawyer’s actions that he attacked the man and caused him to lose his job. Granville Sawyer not only needs a holiday invite to help distract him from the pain that he experienced in the movie, but he could also bring a rational presence to your family’s festivities.

This invite should come with a long list of conditions, so if you’re not looking for a potty-mouthed Santa with a drinking problem and a propensity to steal, you’re welcome to head on down the list to the next option. However, if your family and friends who come over for Christmas dinner are a bit too normal, Willie T. may be a welcomed addition who could spice things up for you. Hide the eggnog and don’t let your kids spend too much time with this Santa, but he is entertaining for the adults.

It may seem like you already spend the holidays with Ralphie since the movie about his quest for the greatest Christmas gift ever is on for 24 hours every year on Christmas Eve, but we still think he would be fun to hang out with. Ralphie’s wild imagination (remember the scene where he takes out Black Bart and his band of bandits) may lead to him daydreaming during dinner, but that doesn’t matter. As long as you have a Red Rider BB Gun stashed somewhere around the tree, and there aren’t any dangerous icicles on the side of your house, Ralphie would be a great guest.
Clark Griswald

The first person on our guest list who would be attending along with one of his costars, Clark Griswald brings the enthusiasm of Buddy the Elf without the weird outfit. Clark is a Christmas lover. In fact, he’s so obsessed with putting together the perfect holiday experience for his family that he may take things a bit too far. Even if you don’t want Clark to come over for Christmas dinner, maybe you could bring him over a few days early to handle putting up all of your decorations. However, if you do that, you should probably make sure that your home’s electrical panel has enough power to handle all of those lights.

Long before live action remakes of animated movies and TV shows were “cool,” Jim Carrey dawned the furry green suit and became The Grinch in 2018. You probably don’t want to bring over the version of The Grinch who we meet during the earliest parts of the movie, but after his little heart grows to three times its normal size, he seems like an ideal guest.
