The coronavirus has affected 13.5 million people in America. Over 270,000 people have died since the pandemic first began. According to the CDC, it can take up to 14 days for someone to show symptoms after coming in contact with the coronavirus. However, most people will develop symptoms within four to five days of coming in contact with an infected person.
This is not the first time that the CDC has changed its guidelines. In July, they stated that people only had to quarantine for 10 days after testing positive for the virus. However, the 10-day quarantine only applies if one no longer has any symptoms. The CDC has to meet with the task force before the new guidelines can be finalized.
Robert Redfield, who is the CDC Director, stated that the guidelines were made back in March, which was when testing wasn’t as readily available as it is today. He also said that there is no reason for people to quarantine for 14 days unless they are sick. Dr. Henry Walke is the incident manager of the CDC.
He stated that agency officials are still trying to determine the exact length of time that someone should quarantine. They are also determine what type of test needs to be administered. Belsie Gonzalez is the spokesperson for the CDC. She stated that the CDC is always reviewing guidelines and making changes when necessary.
Dr. Scott Gotrieb, who is the former Food And Drug Administration Commissioner, stated that this is something that should have been done sooner. He also said that if the quarantine time is shortened, then it will be easier for people to adhere to the guidelines. Additionally. Dr. Gotrieb stated that if people develop Covid-19 without any symptoms, then they probably aren’t contagious after 10 days.
He also argued that if people are asked to quarantine for 14 days, then they may not comply with those recommendations. Dr. Tom Frieden, who was the CDC Director when Barack Obama president, agrees. He said that people are the most likely to spread Covid-19 during the first seven days. After that, the risk of spreading Covid-19 goes down drastically.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, who is the White House Coronavirus adviser, stated that fear of missing work stops many people from getting tested. They don’t want to lose their job and income. If they don’t have to quarantine for 14 days, then they will be more likely to get tested.
