A data breach that occurred at one of the largest, and most widely used credit monitoring services could mean difficult times ahead for the 147 million consumers who were affected. After the announcement about this breach by Equifax, a global settlement was agreed upon to assist with the after affects of the personal information exposure. This agreement was reached in concordance with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, The Federal Trade Commission, and all of the 50 states and territories in the United States.
Many people were not aware that this event took place, but the company wanted to ensure that everyone that they service had the opportunity to check if they were included in any mishaps concerning their personal information. An application will need to be filed by every consumer whose credit was monitored by the Equifax company. These services may not have been provided to an individual personally, but by other businesses who required a credit rating, or some other service that involved using a consumer’s personal information to obtain information.

The eligibility of each individual who applies will be determined through the application process. The breach could have resulted in Identity Theft, financial losses for trying to preserve your assets, or unauthorized charges to an account. Some people may have had to pay to have a freeze, or to unfreeze, their credit report. Any logical adverse affect on consumers have been taken into consideration by the company. Reimbursements can be in the form of cash payments or services. All claims must be filed by January 22, 2020.
To start the claim filing process, you can first check your eligibility by using a user friendly tool to look up your status by entering your last name, and social security number’s last six digits. You will then find out if your personal data was comprised. If you were affected, click on the button that says, File a Claim. The process will only take five minutes unless you are filing for reimbursement for money and time spent because of the breach. Read through the instructions carefully, and fill out your requested information. This is a basic step. Once that is complete, move on to the next page to claim for damages. You will have the option of choosing between free credit monitoring, or a cash payment. The free monitoring service will be provided by on of the other credit monitoring services, and can be for up to four years.
