Major Retailers That Are Closed on Thanksgiving Day 2022
For the last 10 years, all of the big retailers like Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Kohl’s, and Macy’s attracted buyers by opening on Thanksgiving with big Black Friday sales to trigger what is historically the biggest shopping day of the year.
In 2019, JCPenney notoriously opened at 2:00 PM on Thanksgiving, and Walmart opened at 6:00 PM, drawing crowds away from the turkey feast and into their aisles with promises of big savings.

Still, many large retailers stayed closed on Thanksgiving while others had modest shopping hours that started late on Thanksgiving and into the early hours on Black Friday. According to some surveys, nearly three-quarters of retailers claimed to have been closed on Thanksgiving Day in 2021.
Why is this relevant?
Because if last year is any indication, it means that even more stores will likely be closed on Thanksgiving Day in 2022. Here are some of the major retailers that have already announced they will be closed on Thanksgiving Day in 2022.
Major Retailers Closed On Thanksgiving 2022
The following stores have announced in some form or another that they will remain closed all day on Thanksgiving 2022.
Bed Bath & Beyond
Bed Bath & Beyond sent out a press release saying that they are closed for Thanksgiving so that all of their hardworking employees can celebrate the holiday “with friends and family during the important holiday.” Bed Bath & Beyond will reopen for Black Friday on November 25.
Best Buy
While we suspected that Best Buy would be on this list again this year, the big box retailer confirmed in early October that they will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. However, during the rest of the week, Best Buy will be open for extended hours so that all of their shoppers have time to get some early holiday shopping in.
Costco
This should not come as a surprise to anyone as Costco is traditionally closed on Thanksgiving and generally remain closed on other big holidays throughout the year. If you’re concerned about any holiday specials or Black Friday deals from Costco, you’ll find that some of these have already been launched and are active.
Dick’s Sporting Goods
Another big retailer that is typically dark on turkey day, Dick’s Sporting Goods will remain closed on Thanksgiving Day 2022. But if you’re interested in taking advantage of their Black Friday in-store deals, just know that they are opening at 6:00 AM on November 25.
DSW
DSW is officially closed on Thanksgiving Day. Black Friday is generally a big shopping day for DSW, but the opening hours will likely vary depending on mall schedules. If you are looking to take advantage of any deals at DSW this year, check with your local store about when they will be opening on Black Friday.
JCPenney
The announcement that JCPenney will stay closed for Thanksgiving came in mid-October. Not a surprise there, but also not a surprise that they will open in the wee hours of Black Friday, unlocking their doors bright and early at 5:00 AM. If you are determined enough to be some of the first in line, expect some nice coupons from the retailer.
Kohl’s
Another major retailer staying closed on Thanksgiving in 2022, Kohl’s will reopen again on Black Friday at 5:00 AM. Be sure to look into all of the Black Friday sales going on at Kohl’s as there are sure to be deals had.
Macy’s
While the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade will be in full gear on Thursday morning, the department store will remain closed on turkey day. Their Black Friday in-store deals will kick off at 6:00 AM on Friday, November 25. For the savvy shoppers out there, you’ll note that some pre-Black Friday sales are already happening at Macy’s.
Michaels
The large arts and crafts retailer announced their Black Friday plans, and in the same statement also confirmed that they will be closed on Thanksgiving Day 2022 to allow their employees to enjoy the day with friends and family.
REI
The outdoors mega-retailer is letting its employees stay home indoors with friends and family this Thanksgiving and will not be open. Additionally, they will continue their tradition of staying closed on Black Friday as well, encouraging the people of the world to spend the day outdoors instead of consuming and shopping indoors. We don’t expect this will change in the future.
Sam’s Club
Like its retail rival Costco, Sam’s Club will also be closed for Thanksgiving in 2022 as expected. Sam’s Club will also be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. As for Black Friday, Sam’s Club will be keeping its regular operating hours and opening at 10:00 AM. If you are a Plus member, you get early access at 8:00 AM on Friday, November 25.
Target
Target will not be open on Thanksgiving in 2022 and according to its CEO last year, the super-retailer will forever stay closed on Thanksgiving Day. The mega-store will be open on Black Friday, of course, and if you keep an eye on things, you’ll likely discover some early Black Friday deals happening at Target all week leading up to the major shopping day.
Other Stores That Are Closed on Thanksgiving
Aside from all of the giant retailers like the Targets and Sam’s Clubs of the world, there are a few other retailers worth noting will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, including the following.
Academy Sports + Outdoors
This major sports and outdoors retailer will in fact be closed on Thanksgiving this year. Black Friday starts early for Academy Sports + Outdoors, however, and doors are scheduled to be open at 5:00 AM. Look for great deals on top name brands including Yeti and Crocs.
Belk
When Belk announced its plans for Black Friday this year, it also confirmed that they will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. However, you can shop all week long during Belk’s extended hours, which begin at 10:00 AM every day (except for Thanksgiving, of course).
BJ’s Wholesale
Not to go against tradition, BJ’s Wholesale will once again be closed on turkey day. It should come as no surprise as they have pretty much never been open on Thanksgiving. To get a jump on Black Friday sales, you can head to BJ’s Wholesale early on November 25 as they are opening their doors promptly at 8:00 AM.
Boscov’s
Boscov’s is another department store that will be closed on Thanksgiving in 2022, announcing these plans way back in August. Since COVID landed in 2020, Boscov’s has been closed on the national holiday, and it seems like there are no plans to make any changes in the future.
Hy-Vee
One of the few semi-major grocery outlets that will be closed on Thanksgiving, Hy-Vee will keep all locations dark this turkey day. It’s out of the norm for a grocery chain, as most keep some operating hours on Thanksgiving Day.
Ulta
Ulta will also be closed on Thanksgiving in 2022, announcing earlier this year that they were giving their employees the day off to spend quality time with loved ones. Ulta will be open and ready for business on Black Friday.
‘Tis the Season to Be Closed
It may come as something of a surprise that a few of the mega-retailers mentioned above are closed on Thanksgiving, but given the recent history of big-name retailers like Target, Best Buy, and Bed Bath & Beyond, it is not all that surprising. And it should not come as anyone’s surprise that these retail giants will be fully staffed with the lights turned on come Black Friday on November 25.
