You, like many others, love your air fryer and cannot imagine life without it. It makes cooking easier and food tasty. But, are you unsure of how to clean it? We will give you some tips to make the process easier.
With deep frying, oil is messy. It splatters, is hard to clean and the cleanup makes the cooking almost not worthwhile. In contrast, air frying uses hot air and only a small amount of oil, so the cleanup process is easier. That does not mean you are exempt, though. Fat or oil may spill into the basket during cooking. Grease may pile up over time, and smoke and oils from old grease may tamper the preparation experience. Oil that has been trapped may even burn, too.

For this reason, it is recommended that air fryers are cleaned after every use. Note that some models may go in the dish washer, check to see if that is the case for your model. There is, however, a method to the madness that is cleaning an air fryer.
Steps to Clean an Air Fryer
- Once you are done cooking, unplug the appliance, let it cool down and then grab the basket for cleaning. If making a food in a sauce, try doing so when the basket is slightly hot to make rinsing easier. The sooner you clean it, the better. While it may be tempting to leave overnight, it will get harder and harder to get remnants off, so just get it done!
- Clean the drawer and basket with water that is warm and soapy. Use a sponge. If food pieces are stuck, soak them in the water so they eventually come off.
- Poke out food that is stuck in the basket with skewers or a toothpick. Then dry the basket and drawer.
- Wipe the outside. Use a soft towel and set the appliance aside to dry.
Dealing with the Smells
If you find your air fryer has a lingering smell, soak the basket and drawer in water with dish soap for 30 minutes. Then try cleaning it again. If that does not help, try rubbing lemon juice all over the drawer and the basket. That should aid in getting rid of the odors for good.
Other Tips to Keep in Mind
Be mindful of the nonstick coating on your appliance, if applicable. It may start to chip away with continued use. Also, if you are looking for an air fryer, or are on the market for a new one, be mindful of reviews and try to get one that is simple to clean to make your life easier. Just our two cents!
