Seeking Balance through Astrology
When people study astrology, there is a focus on understanding specific natal planetary energies in order to achieve self-understanding. However, one very important aspect of astrology that is often overlooked is the integration of oppositional energies. Duality is the main feature of this experience. There are masculine and feminine, light and dark, old and young and many other polarizing energies that all make up the whole. To become a whole person, it is important to acknowledge all aspects of the self. For example, every person possesses both masculine and feminine energies. Only acknowledging one aspect of our psyches can lead to energetic deficiencies that show up in our lives in various ways.
Through astrology, we can learn to not only embrace our natal energies but to also find balance through integrating the energy of our opposite sign.
Wholeness via the Astrological Polarity
The astrological axis represents the signs that are 180 degrees from each other in the zodiac. The following is astrological polarity by signs.
Aries (1st house)——Libra (7th house): The self vs. Others
Taurus (2nd house)——Scorpio (8th house): Self-possession vs. Integration with the other
Gemini (3rd house)——Sagittarius (9th): Many Details vs. The Bigger Picture
Cancer (4th house)——-Capricorn (10th house): Inner security vs. Outer security
Leo (5th house)——-Aquarius (11th house): Ego-self vs. Assimilation with the group
Virgo (6th house)——-Pisces (12th house): Integration of the self vs. Integration with Oneness
The astrological polarity features the duality of the wetness of water in contrast to the dryness of earth and the warmth of fire set apart from the coolness of air. Neither of these is better nor worse than the other. They just are. Achieving wholeness through the astrological polarity occurs when we make the most of the positive attributes of our existing planetary energies while also incorporating the positive attributes of the opposite sign. This is applied to energetic balance.
How to Integrate the Opposite
Integration of astrological polarities is a conscious effort. By default, we are taught to focus on the development of the ego-self which is represented by the sign and house placement of the sun. Wholeness is being everything we are (the ego) while acknowledging that we are nothing at all (ego dissolution). It is becoming who you are while balancing out what you are with opposing energies. Here are some examples of astrological polarity integration at play.
Example One-Leo integrating Aquarian energy
Leo is known for its central focus on the self. There is a desire to set apart from the rest as a way of defining itself. There is nothing wrong with healthy ego development. The issue is when there is an exclusion of others to the point of self-centeredness. Leo desires attention, but Leo can’t get attention without the masses. This is where Aquarius integration is necessary. Aquarius goes beyond itself and considers the community and the group. A perfect visual of Leo integrating Aquarian energy is the solar system. Yes, the sun (Leo) is the center. However, the sun can only be the center relative to the position of the other planets. Also, just as the sun (Leo) is special due to its position as the center, there are other planetary bodies such as Uranus (the ruler of Aquarius) that has its own uniqueness due to its odd orbit. Leos interested in achieving balance will honor their desire to shine while also acknowledging the light and specialness of others because, in the end, we are all one and the same.
Example Two-Capricorn integrating Cancer energy
Capricorn is known for its outer-directed, goal-oriented, status-seeking energy. This energy understands that maturity, accountability, and responsibility are vital in advancing forward in this experience. There is nothing wrong with goals, achievements, and hard work. Issues develop when Capricorn attaches more value to obtaining security through the external environment instead of finding security within the self. Cancer energy seeks security on a personal level via self-care and forming close bonds with family. The security at home within the self and within the private environment allows Cancerian energy to feel secure in the external environment. A visual of Capricorn integrating Cancer energy is the outwardly successful man/woman. Yes, a person can have all the success in the world, but does it really mean much if he/she is afraid of going home because he/she is faced with loneliness? The Capricorn/Cancer integration is also prevalent with those who fear the loss of status because of a lack of development of inner-security. These individuals fret about losing the “signs of success” because they have not integrated the understanding that security starts from within.
Evolutionary Astrology and Polarity Integration
