AAA
The launch of a new streaming service should be a time of great excitement, but in the time of COVID-19, the arrival of Quibi has been low key. The latest streaming platform to try and take our attention from the established giants of the industry seems to be facing an uphill battle for subscribers. The major difference between this streaming service and the others on the market is the service being streamed solely to cell phones and mobile devices.
The name of the streaming service is based on the idea that every show, whether reality-based or fiction is available in quick bites of 10 minutes or less. The main idea is that users of the service will get their entertainment in small sections with fictional shows described as movies with chapters.
Launching in April 2020, the Quibi Mobile App has arrived with some major names behind the more than 20 shows forming the basis of its starting schedule. From reality shows to fictional series, the service is creating short bursts of entertainment designed for commuting and short breaks in the day that can be filled with a few minutes of content.
Anong the stars who have been employed to make the launch of the app as memorable as possible is Idris Elba who is expanding on his role as an amateur car racing driver in Elba Vs Block. Other shows that can be enjoyed include a comedy sketch show fronted by Nicole Ritchie, Nikki Fre$h. In terms of the non-reality content, the first offerings from the streaming platform are fronted by stars including Liam Hemsworth and Kaitlin Olsen.
Who is Behind the App?
One of the main reasons for the excitement around the launch of the app is the big names who are behind the development of Quibi. The app is being headed by former Hollywood executives Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman who have helmed major companies across different industries. Excitement has been growing for the launch of the app that users must download to a phone because Katzenberg and Whitman were at the helm of Disney during the initial stages of its return to popularity in the 1990s.
The arrival of Katzenberg and Whitman in the streaming sector has allowed the app to attract some of the biggest names in both finance and entertainment. During its funding rounds before the launch of the app, Katzenberg and Whitman secured more than $1 billion to begin producing its bite-sized content. Hollywood talent has been attracted to the project behind the camera as well as in front with Steven Soderbergh and the Funny or Die group producing content.
How is this Streaming Service Different?
During its initial offering to potential investors, the app was going to be the first step in bringing the streaming service to the public before expanding to larger screens. It seems this plan has been abandoned in favor of maintaining the current situation of providing content solely to be consumed on cell phones and mobile devices.
The mobile app is a lower cost than the majority of its competitors with a monthly subscription available for less than $5 with ads and just under $8 without. A major benefit for those who are intrigued by the app is a three-month trial that is available during its initial launch.
For those potential subscribers who are worried about the problems faced with keeping their phones horizontal for the best picture, a feature is available for perfect framing at all times. When a phone is flipped horizontally or vertically, the image is always framed perfectly as size and shape are altered automatically for a perfect picture at all times.
What are the Chances of Success?
One of the big problems facing the app is the lack of commuting being done at the time of its launch, which has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, the app will only prove a success if younger viewers can be attracted to its short-form content that has been created to rival videos seen on social media platforms
