On June 20th, the sun will transition into the sign of Cancer. It’s time for us to get into our feelings and come back home to our roots and most importantly to ourselves. Synced with the summer solstice, the sun’s entry into the sign of Cancer beckons us to the emotional plane as we are encouraged to explore who we are as well as to connect deeply with others. During this time, we may be thinking about how we can make changes without being direct. Just like the crab, it is very likely we will adopt indirect approaches to getting to where we want to be. The cloak of lunar energy, empathy, and the exploration of deep feeling emotions bring us home to those we love dearly as well as to ourselves.
Cancer Season is Here!
With the sun’s entry into the sign of Cancer, we navigate from the airy, mentally-focused energy of Gemini to a slower, more fluid energy that delves into the emotional realm with the sign of Cancer. As the first water sign, Cancer is deeply connected to his emotions, and they are not afraid to show them. Ruled by the moon, Cancer’s emotional state is prone to fluctuations that many would refer to as being moody. The moon changes signs every two and a half days which also causes a shift in Cancer’s personal energy imprint. Thus, during this Cancer season, it’s important to take note of the lunar cycles and how they impact us individually and collectively. This is particularly true for anyone that has heightened Cancer and/or lunar energy in their charts such as the sun, moon, rising sign as well as personal planets. Likewise, exploring the lunar phases such as waxing, waning, full, and new moon as well as the different quarters can provide information on how lunar energy will be impacting us.

This Cancer season encourages us to explore our internal processes. Too often we get caught up in thinking that we shouldn’t share our emotions so we keep them bottled up. With Cancer energy, emotional expression is important…even if it means crying. Quite often, Cancer is referred to as the cry baby of the zodiac, and while this may be true at times because Cancer can be very emotional whether it is sentimental or deeply hurt, expressing these emotions offers us a greater understanding of ourselves. So, use Cancer season as a chance to get in touch with your emotions. This may be easier for some than others as the emotional realm can be perceived as messy by those that are more so aligned with logic. Emotions are based on how people feel, and even though feelings aren’t always based on logic nevertheless they play a very important part in understanding ourselves and those closest to us.
Cancer Season & The Summer Solstice
One of the distinctive factors of Cancer season is its alignment with the Summer Solstice. This is a very important time that highlights a moment in this experience that is aligned with the energy of change. The solstices occur twice a year in the summer and the winter. Each of these solstices represents a peak point of change that moves us forward. For example, the current summer solstice occurring on June 20th represents the longest day of sunlight and the official start of the summer season which resonates with the change in energy that is associated with the sign of Cancer. While the summer solstice is the official beginning of the summer season and the longest day of the year, it also represents the trek towards the winter season as the days will begin to get shorter from this point on. This is similar to the Cancerian focus on the inward. Just consider the progression of the water signs in astrology. Cancer starts off the water sign triad in the warmth of summer and leads us into the depths of fall with deep, probing Scorpio with Pisces finishing us off in flux between the coldness of winter and the hint of spring in the air.
Change in the Water Element
Cancer season in alignment with the summer solstice offers us change via the water element. This is a great time to consider the changes that we would like to implement into our lives. It is important to note how Cancer approaches change as a water sign. With the crab as its astrological symbol, Cancer always knows where it wants to go, but it does so in an indirect way. If you have ever watched a crab move about, you’d be very surprised at its final destination. It walks sideways to get to its destination…almost as if it wants to give the appearance of moving one way as a distraction to get to where it really wants to be. That’s how Cancer moves and initiates its change-indirectly and without drawing attention to itself.
During this Cancer season, consider how you can make changes in your own way…without necessarily drawing attention to the changes that you are initiating. Cancer is a water sign that operates under the cloak of the moon and while there is light at the full moon, Cancer keeps its intentions to itself until it’s at its destination. This is something to consider for those of us initiating new plans at this time. Not everyone has to know where you are going at this moment…except you and perhaps those trusted few.
Coming Home to Ourselves
With Cancer energy, it is important to consider our roots at this time. Home, family, and the mother are important themes. Are we in touch with our roots? What do we know about the maternal side of our families? What do we know about the women in our lives? How do we operate within our families? Are there issues related to the family of origin that we need to explore? Are there ways that we can strengthen our family unit? Likewise, where are we in regards to nurturing? Cancer is one of the most nurturing signs of the zodiac, and it functions at its best when it can express its caring, empathetic side in a safe, secure place.
Finally, for all the caring, nurturing energy that Cancer gives out, it is important to nurture the self. As a very empathic, emotional sign that is always willing to be there for other people, self-care is of the utmost importance for Cancer. When we are pouring so much into other people, it is vital that we take the time to consider what we need for ourselves. Even the moon requires time to become full so that it may share its light. During this Cancer season, let us remember to take time to care for ourselves. It is nearly impossible to pour from an empty cup.
Welcome to Cancer season, everyone. The watery energy of the emotional plane offers us the opportunity to connect deeply to ourselves and others from a safe, secure place
