It has been over 500 days since the deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. On June 9, the House select committee charged with investigating the January 6 riots will finally unveil what it has uncovered. Here is what you need to know about this revelation.
Details of Hearings
The first public hearing by the committee is scheduled for Thursday, June 9 at 8 pm ET. This committee is purposely holding the hearing during the primetime hours so that the nation can learn more about the information revealed during the 10-month investigation. Thursday’s hearing is the first in a series of revelations that will be held in the coming weeks. Each hearing is going to cover specific topics that will work together to paint the complete picture of what happened on this pivotal day in American history.

Reports indicate that the hearings will feature presentations of video clips from the day in addition to footage from the approximately 1,000 interviews that were conducted as part of the investigation. For the most part, the bulk of the investigation has been conducted away from the public eye. This will be the first time that the American public will be privy to the details of the day.
What to Expect
According to a statement released by the committee last week, they will present new material that has not been seen by the public. The panel said that Americans can expect to learn that the day was a coordinated effort designed to overturn the official results of the 2020 presidential election while obstructing the legal transfer of power from then-President Donald Trump to President-Elect Joe Biden.
While the committee has been generally tight-lipped about its findings, hints are emerging indicating what people can expect out of the hearings. The panel has clearly been looking at how Trump’s false claims surrounding the election instigated the violent attacks at the Capitol.
What Committee Members Are Saying Ahead of the Public Hearings
Republican Rep. Liz Cheney said over the weekend that the attack was just one part of a well-organized conspiracy, calling the events of the day “chilling.” Cheney went on to say that she did not learn anything over the course of the investigation that made her less concerned about Trump’s role in the events of the day.
On the other side of the aisle, Democratic Rep. David Cicilline told reporters that the new evidence is “disturbing.” He said that there is significant evidence that proves that the former president was asked to tell the rioters to stop the violence yet he refused to do so, making him complicit in the attacks.
Various committee members have indicated that the findings will show that Trump was focused on the January 6 certification of the Electoral College as his last opportunity to remain in the White House. The panel is aiming to provide a clear narrative that clearly demonstrates that the former president was aware that his supporters gathered on the National Mall that day could get violent.
Lawmakers have teased that they have evidence that Trump spent 187 minutes watching television and communicating with various members of the media and his allies as the attacks unfolded. According to testimony provided by an aide to Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, Trump was pleased when he found out that the rioters were chanting to hang Vice President Mike Pence.
Understanding Trump’s Mindset
Trump is looking to surround himself with his closest allies and supporters as the public hearings approach. The former president wants his allies to aggressively defend him and dispute the findings revealed in the hearings. However, it is difficult for some of Trump’s most ardent supporters to provide this assistance in large part because they are not yet aware of what the committee has discovered. This lack of information makes it challenging for Trump and his team to plan a strategy or to control the narrative. They will likely be finding out the information at the same time as the rest of the nation.
