Standing Strong Against Sin: Be Inspired to Resist Temptation

2 Mins read

Matthew 26:41

Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed [is] willing, but the flesh [is] weak.

Thoughts for Today

At times, it can be easy enough to allow temptation to weaken the spirit, especially because the body is often so weak. In order to avoid being brought down by sin, it’s important to pay attention and be mindful. Perhaps the most powerful shield anyone can use against temptation is prayer.

Consider This… Although temptation comes in many forms, be wary of it. It will catch you unawares, and you’ll surely be led astray, at least for a time. Knowing the sins of the flesh makes it easier to identify them and cast them away.

A few examples are impurity, drunkenness, envy, idolatry, sexual immorality, fits of anger, strife, sensuality, enmity, rivalries and many more. Remember that jealousy is one of the most dangerous sins of the flesh because it can give rise to intense hatred and selfishness amongst families, friends and strangers.

Combatting sin with good deeds can be beneficial to the spirit. For example, when you feel selfish, try being selfless by volunteering for a cause that means something to you personally.

An act of kindness may include holding a door open for someone in a wheelchair, defending children against bullies, saying a prayer in solitude for a loved one, comforting someone in times of need when no one else would care, among others. Be kind to people without being a people pleaser, and you’ll be better able to maintain your self respect. It’s vital to live an honest lifestyle in your mind and through your actions.

Be sure to pray on a regular basis for strength against temptation. You can find plenty of verses in the Bible to say when you need them. Whenever you feel the first signs of weakness to sin, it can be helpful to say a prayer out loud or in your mind. By making an honest effort to strengthen your spirit, your body will have that much more strength.

You can see temptation as a challenge you must face. Each time you’re tempted and overcome it, your spirit becomes stronger. Keep a positive mindset and be brave because everything, no matter how evil or good, happens for a reason. Continue to persevere in the face of every trial and tribulation that stands before you. Every effort you make will be worth it.

Winning against the temptations of the flesh can truly be a struggle like you’ve never known. Therefore, understand that you’re not perfect and to forgive yourself if and when you sin.

After this, get back on your feet and face your fears. After all, God is forgiving because He understands how weak the flesh can be. Love yourself unconditionally, because only you know the struggles you endure. Reading the Bible each day or a few times a week is an exceptional way to avoid sin.

Prayer

O Christ, Son of God, for our sake you fasted forty days and allowed yourself to be tempted. Protect us so that we may not be led astray by any temptation. Since man does not live by bread alone, nourish our souls with the heavenly food of your Word; through your mercy, O our God, you are blessed and live and govern all things, now and forever. Amen.
