When Did Everything Begin?
A sequence of posts in October of 2017 on the 4chan. message board by an anonymous user was the beginning of this movement. The user is known a Q, with claims of security approval from the United States referred to as Q clearance. These messages are now called breadcrumbs or Q drops and are written in a cryptic language along with pro-Donald Trump presidential themes, pledges and various slogans.
The movement originated with Pixxagate with a lot of the same specifics and characteristics. The roots can be traced to the Elders of Zion Protocols, a false document exposing a nonexistent plot of the Jews to seize world control This was the justification for antisemitism during the 20th century. The belief adrenochrome is extracted from child victims is a modern version of the antisemitic blood libel.
The Mainstream Presence
During the last few months, the movement has become mainstream. False information has been posted on social media networks including Facebook and Twitter by the movement regarding the 2020 presidential election, protests for Black Lives Matter and Covid-19. Conspiracy supporters have attempted to establish connections with other activist causes including anti-child trafficking and anti-vaccine movements to increase ranks.
News is received offline as well with believers arrested for committing violent crimes such as the murder of a New York mafia boss and another making death threats against Joseph R. Biden Jr. According to the FBI, QAnon is a potential threat regarding domestic terror. A new milestone was announced last week when Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia was announced the winner in an extremely conservative district of the Republican primary despite being known as a supporter of the movement.
The belief is she will be elected to Congress this November. Donald Trump referred to her as a future Republican Star, potentially increasing the perceived threat of the movement.
How Many Individuals are Members of the Movement?
There is no definitive answer to this question because there is no official directory for membership. The majority of experts believe the actual number is far from small. When only the hard-core members are considered, hundreds of thousands of members are believed to exist. Although these individuals believe there is a plot against the President of the United States, they do not believe Satanists are eating children.
Many of the most popular support groups on Facebook boast over 100,000 members each. According to a recent announcement from Twitter, steps are currently being taken for limiting the reach of well over 150,000 accounts linked to this group. NBC News recently released a recent report based on an internal study of members on the platform. The results showed thousands of groups were in existence.
When all of the groups were considered, the report revealed the membership was in the millions. The belief is these numbers have increased due to the pandemic because so many individuals have been forced to remain indoors. The increase in socializing and entertainment through the internet has pulled many people into this movement. The Wall Street Journal recently published an article stating there was an increase of over 600 percent in 10 large groups on Facebook. Numerous members have become devoted to the movement since the beginning of the lockdowns.
Will the Movement Impact the 2020 United States Presidential Election?
According to the most recent studies conducted in the United States, the majority of Americans remain unaware of the movement. For those who do believe, it has become the foundation of their support for the President. During the past, the President has tweeted supporters. It is unknown whether or not he was aware of their affiliations. Last month, a meme of the organization was hosted on Instagram by his son Eric.
The members have a lot of influence regarding the politicians on the ballot in November for Congress. Although many of them have a slim hope of winning, others are considered to be shoe-ins. The likelihood is either numerous politicians sympathetic to this theory or supportive of the movement will be sitting in the next United States Congress.
